Dr. James MacDowell is a board-certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon who offers comprehensive Oral and Maxillofacial surgery services ranging from dental and implant surgery, to complex facial reconstruction, trauma, and cosmetic surgery. With over 25 years of Dental and Surgical experience, Dr. MacDowell is focused on providing the utmost in quality of care along with the best in technology and safety in a custom designed environment for an unmatched experience.

Dr. MacDowell graduated from University of California Los Angeles in 1997 and received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the nation’s top Dental School at the University of California San Francisco with two National Institute of Health Fellowships followed by an Advanced Education in Dentistry Residency with full surgical privileges awarded. After that, Dr. MacDowell completed his Oral and Maxillofacial residency and a General Surgery Internship from the United States Navy Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Program in Naval Medical Center San Diego. During this 6 year intensive training program, Dr. MacDowell learned state of the art surgical techniques in all aspects of oral and facial surgeries, including dental and implant surgeries, facial reconstruction, trauma, cosmetic surgery and received certification in General Anesthesia. After that, Dr. MacDowell accepted active duty orders in the Navy and has served as the Department Head of both Dental Clinics and the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Department, as well as residency faculty member and mentor during his time in Navy.

After thousands of surgeries ranging from simple extractions to complex facial reconstruction from trauma and congenial defects, Dr. MacDowell started his private practice to focus on continuing to provide the highest quality and level of care to the community. Dr. MacDowell is affiliated with Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas.

In addition, Dr. MacDowell has published Oral Surgery Research as well as authoring a Chapter in a Surgical Text book. He also believes in giving back to those less fortunate and volunteers to provide free oral surgery for homeless veterans.

In his spare time, Dr. MacDowell enjoys sailing, racing, travel, music and hiking.
